Job Description - Forestry Foreman (240000AZ) Forestry Foreman - ( 240000AZ ) Description Position Grade: 11G Job Type: Full-Time (Permanent) Location: Forestry Department – St. Louis, MO Examination Number: EX1028 Incumbents in this position perform, lead and directly supervise work crews engaged in performing a variety of urban forestry tree maintenance functions such as planting, trimming, removing, stump grinding and other related duties. These positions may require mandatory availability for 24‑hour snow and storm call. Essential Functions and Responsibilities The individual will supervise work in the planting, trimming, removal and overall care of City trees. They must conduct service ratings on subordinate staff members to evaluate work performance. Individual assists in the identification of hazardous trees and makes recommendations on necessary services. Individual assists with training in relation to effective tree trimming practices and the associated equipment used on the job daily. Individual ensures production standards are met and provides feedback to Forestry supervisors. Individual utilizes work order documents for organizing daily work and delegating field assignments. Preferences Two years of recent full-time experience in supervising or participating in the professional care and maintenance of trees and groundkeeping work. Associate's degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture, or a closely related field. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform basic data analysis including reviewing, classifying, prioritizing data and referencing established standards. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor crew members to achieve desired outcomes. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate and repair complex equipment such as motor vehicles, chippers, chain saws, loaders, aerial lifts and more. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to use advisory data and information such as accident reports, work orders, production reports, maintenance records, manuals, maps and safety regulations. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculate percentages. Functional Reasoning: Requires independent judgment to develop approaches for problem resolution and apply supervisory principles. Situational Reasoning: Requires decisiveness and creativity in evaluating information against subjective criteria. Environmental Factors: Exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery vibrations, traffic hazards, wildlife and toxic agents. Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds, push and pull heavy objects, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, bend and twist for training and work procedures. Sensory Requirements: Requires recognizing similarities or differences in colors, shapes and sounds associated with job‑related objects and detecting diseased trees. Qualifications An Associate’s degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture, or a closely related field OR two years of experience supervising and/or participating in the professional care and maintenance of trees, including operation of tree maintenance equipment such as chainsaws, pole pruners, aerial lift trucks, chippers, stump cutters, and dump trucks. OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. License Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
